What N95 Mask Fit Testing Covers

Every session includes hands-on coaching, so you understand how your respirator works as well as passing the test.

  • Why respiratory protection matters and when it's legally required
  • Choosing the right respirator: N95, half-mask or full-face
  • Pre-use inspection and face-seal checks
  • Correct donning and doffing
  • A user seal check using positive and negative pressure
  • Cleaning, storage and maintenance
  • The full qualitative protocol (Bitrex or Saccharin) with a clear pass or fail result

Before Your Appointment

  • Be clean-shaven where the mask seals. Under CSA Z94.4, we can't complete the test if facial hair sits between your skin and the respirator.
  • Don't eat, drink (except water), smoke or chew gum for 15 minutes before. Because the test relies on taste, this keeps your result accurate.
  • Know your respirator model. If your employer or school issues a specific make, model and size, bring it or tell us when you book.
  • Plan for about 20 minutes. That includes coaching, the seal check and the test itself.

Your Same-Day Fit Test Certificate

When you pass your N95 mask fit testing, you'll receive a digital certificate the same day. Because CSA Z94.4 requires it, the certificate records the exact respirator make, model and size we tested you on. As a result, you can hand it straight to your employer or placement coordinator.

You book and receive your certificate online. However, the standard requires you to complete the fit test itself in person.

Who Needs a Respirator Fit Test?

Anyone who wears a tight-fitting respirator at work or school needs N95 mask fit testing. For example, our clients include healthcare staff, first responders, construction, manufacturing and lab workers, clinic teams, and students who need fit testing for clinical placements. Also, most workplaces require a new test every year, so book before your current certificate expires.

N95 Mask Fit Testing FAQs

What is qualitative fit testing?

It's a pass or fail method that CSA Z94.4 recognizes. While you wear your respirator, we introduce a test agent such as Bitrex (bitter) or Saccharin (sweet). If you can't taste it, your mask is sealing properly.

Can I get certified entirely online?

No. You can book online and receive a digital certificate. However, CSA Z94.4 requires you to complete the fit test itself in person.

How often do I need to be re-tested?

Usually every year. You should also re-test when you change respirator make, model or size, or after facial changes such as significant weight change or dental work. Always follow your workplace policy.

Can I be tested if I have a beard?

Not on a tight-fitting respirator. Facial hair where the mask seals prevents a valid test, so please shave that area before your appointment.

Do you test half-mask and full-face respirators?

Yes. Along with N95s, we fit test half-mask and full-face respirators under CSA Z94.4.

My employer asked for "Red Cross" fit testing. Is this the same?

Fit testing requirements come from CSA Z94.4, which is the standard we follow. Most employers accept a CSA Z94.4 certificate, but check your organization's policy if you're unsure.
