What Your Hamilton Fit Test Covers

⏱ About 20 minutes  ·  in person

Every session also includes hands-on coaching. Therefore, you don't just pass the test; you learn to wear your respirator correctly on the job too.

Session Content

  • Why respiratory protection matters and when your job requires it
  • Choosing the right respirator: N95, half-mask or full-face
  • Pre-use inspection and face-seal checks before you start
  • Correct donning and doffing, so the seal stays tight
  • Cleaning and storage, so your respirator stays in good condition
  • Finally, a full qualitative fit test with a clear pass or fail result

Certification

  • Digital fit test certificate, emailed soon after you pass
  • Lists the respirator make, model and size you passed on, since CSA Z94.4 requires it
  • Most workplaces and schools also ask for a new test every year

Before Your Appointment

A little preparation helps you pass the first time, so please check these points before you arrive.

Requirements

  • Be clean-shaven where the mask seals. Otherwise, under CSA Z94.4, we can't complete the test because facial hair sits between your skin and the respirator.
  • Skip food, drinks (except water), smoking and gum for 15 minutes before. Because the test relies on taste, this keeps your result accurate.
  • Know your respirator model. Also, if your employer or school issues a specific make, model and size, bring it or tell us when you book.

Who Needs Mask Fit Testing in Hamilton?

Generally, anyone who wears a tight-fitting respirator at work or school needs one. For example, our clients include healthcare workers, first responders, lab staff, and construction and manufacturing crews. Likewise, students at Hamilton colleges and universities often need a fit test before their first clinical placement.

What Is Qualitative Fit Testing?

Qualitative fit testing is a pass or fail method that CSA Z94.4 recognizes for N95 and half-mask respirators. While you wear your mask, we introduce a bitter (Bitrex) or sweet (Saccharin) test agent. Consequently, if you can't taste it during a series of movements, your respirator is sealing properly. In other words, the test confirms that the mask actually protects you, not just that it looks right.

Similarly, the CCOHS guidance on respirator fit testing explains the official requirements.

Mask Fit Testing Hamilton — Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a mask fit test take?

Plan for about 20 minutes, since that also covers coaching, the seal check and the test exercises.

Can I get certified entirely online?

No, because CSA Z94.4 requires an in-person test. However, you can still book online and receive a digital certificate.

How often do I need a mask fit test?

Generally, most workplaces ask for a new test once a year. In addition, you should re-test when you change respirator make, model or size, or after facial changes such as major dental work or significant weight change. Still, always follow your workplace policy.

Can I be tested if I have a beard?

Not on a tight-fitting respirator. Facial hair where the mask seals prevents a valid test, so please shave that area before your appointment.

Do you test half-mask and full-face respirators?

Yes. Along with N95s, we also fit test half-mask and full-face respirators under CSA Z94.4.

My employer asked for "Red Cross" fit testing. Is this the same?

Fit testing requirements come from CSA Z94.4, so that is the standard we follow. Therefore, most employers accept a CSA Z94.4 certificate. Still, check your organization's policy if you're unsure.
