First Responder (FR) is 40 hours and covers foundational pre-hospital emergency care: patient assessment, BLS/CPR, hemorrhage control, and management of medical and trauma emergencies. No prerequisites required.
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) builds on FR with more advanced patient assessment and intervention skills, meeting NOCP standards. It prepares you for higher-acuity responses and transport-related care in pre-hospital and paramedic-adjacent roles. Requires current SFA/CPR-C (full program) or valid FR cert (upgrade pathway).
All three courses are 40 hours delivered over 4 consecutive days, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. FR recertification is approximately 20 hours; EMR recertification is approximately 40 hours.
First Responder and EMR certificates are valid for 3 years. BLS certification (included with EMR) is valid for 1 year — many employers require current BLS annually. Marine Advanced First Aid certificates are valid for 3 years.
Yes. Qualified FR holders can bridge to EMR through a condensed Red Cross pathway. Proof of a current, non-expired First Responder certificate is required. We run bridging and recertification dates regularly in Mississauga — call us for upcoming dates.
No. Admissions and hiring standards vary by school, employer, and province. EMR is widely recognized pre-hospital training, but always confirm specific entry requirements directly with your target paramedic program or emergency service.
Marine Advanced First Aid is designed for professional vessel crew, commercial mariners, officers, coast guard auxiliaries, and anyone requiring Transport Canada approved advanced on-water emergency training. A valid First Responder certificate is required to enrol.
